Birth, marriage, death, and divorce certificates issued by Florida follow the record channel — the certificate is obtained or verified through the issuing office and apostilled from there. That's the specialty of our sister service, My Florida Apostille: they handle the record, the state filing, and delivery, and you never mail anything. Former residents use it constantly — your Florida birth certificate doesn't care that you live in Oregon or Portugal now.

Door 3: Your document is already notarized by a Florida notary

The Department of State can apostille any genuine Florida notarization — but here's the honest caveat: documents notarized elsewhere are the single biggest source of rejected filings, usually over a defective notarial certificate (a missing commission expiration, wrong wording for an online notarization). Two good paths: send it through My Florida Apostille, which files existing Florida notarizations — or, if the document can simply be re-signed, a fresh online notarization with us removes the rejection risk entirely and is often faster end to end.

Moved away — or moved abroad?

Everything above is remote by design. Former Floridians in other states use the same online sessions and the same Florida filing; Floridians abroad can often notarize from overseas when the document has a US connection. Because an apostille certifies the notary, not the signer. Your notarization is performed online by a Florida-commissioned notary, so the notarial act is governed by Florida law (Chapter 117, Part II) no matter where you’re sitting. That makes your document a Florida document — and the Florida Secretary of State is the competent authority to apostille it.
